Domain traffic stats - take with a pinch of salt

The only thing 10,000 uniques in a month tells me for certain is that domain was visited 10,000 times in the last
month, and nothing more (surprise, surprise). Anything else you derive from that figure should be eyed with a decent amount of suspicion, because those 10,000 uniques can come from genuine and artificial sources:

  • Targeted traffic = genuine
  • Other interested domainers viewing the content of the site = artificial
  • The owner checking the site is up and running = artificial
  • Paid-for traffic to inflate domain's value = artificial
  • Owner faking the value in some other way, such as doctoring stat pages screenshots
  • People trying to find available domain names by typing them directly in to
    their browser's address bar

In addition, watch out for seasonal domains where traffic will vary significantly month-to-month.
